Guitarist Retrospective: 1998-2024

So I’ve mentioned before that I got my 1st guitar at 12 years old in 1998. It was a Christmas gift and fantastic! Interestingly enough, my parents accidentally bought me a left handed guitar, not a right handed one. Since Jimi Hendrix was the biggest reason for learning, that didn’t deter me from trying to learn.

I ended up selling that guitar when we moved to New Hampshire, which is interesting, because it was originally purchased in New Hampshire. The internet was still in its infancy and there was no good resources around to learn anyway. Not like I could have started a band, as I come across so few people in my age range that know how to play any instrument, never mind the typical metal quartet of Drummer, Bassist, Rhythm Guitarist/Lead Guitarist.

Fast forward to 2004, I bought a nice guitar off eBay for about $80 dollars shipped. It was pink and goth style, but it looked so killer. I got to play around with some things here and there, like a wash pedal for the first time. I got tired of just being able to emulate certain things I had seen Rock Stars do, but not really understanding what I was doing. I wanted to really be a musician and not a hack that could chug and play the odd one finger power chords.

So I sold that guitar and picked up a $60 dollar acoustic guitar at the pawn shop and said “I’m becoming a musician”. 2008 would be a year that would drastically change my life for the better.

From 22 to 25 I played that thing non stop. Morning, noon, night. I didn’t care, I spent at least one hour a day learning.

Then like most people I hit the learning plateau that stops progress. So I took a short break from playing, so I could access the problem and find a way back to getting better.

Back then, you didn’t have all the fancy YouTuber’s you had now. You had Justinguitar.com and Marty had only just Started his YT channel. Basically you’re alone on this journey and for me, I would not have had it any other way. I mean, did Jimi have it easy? No, so why should I? I may not become a rock god, but I would become a musician. The latter is the most important part.

So the reason I write this is because I got offered a job interview at guitar center to teach guitar in Portland. I was the only one who applied, but due to conflicts with scheduling of bus routes, could not make it. Let’s be honest, it was a welfare gig from the start as most people learn online.

Hell, when I first started at 12, finding anyone to teach you was a pain in the ass, prior to the internet. My dad managed a band, locally and I could have asked there, but I didn’t want someone to take time to teach me, when it could service them better to make music. Regardless, like I posted above, I preferred the harder route, like many successful guitarist before me had walked.

So you know I would have probably been fired from Guitar Center before Christmas even showed up, unless they needed one more sales man, which I doubt. This isn’t to knock Guitar Center, rather understand the current climate we’re in and that local teaching isn’t exactly appropriate nowadays, since, as I said everything is driven by the internet.

Let look at the whose who of online guitarist

Justin Sandercroe

Marty Swartz

Music is win

Brandon

Rick Beato

And about a million in between all of those. The smart idea would be to build a curriculum on those people and branching out into certification for people who have passed their prerequisites in order to accommodate for people who cannot have access to these people personally like when they first started there channels as the volume, no pun intended, is probably a logistical nightmare.

My style for videos is very concise, too concise I would argue, as my entire series would probably only have about 10 videos total.

However, there is a list of things I noticed over the years that I wish I had known when I started playing in the first place.

  1. Anchor fingers is something I wish I had in the 90s. I might have become a decent player sooner. Look at Justinguitar for more one that. My favorite take away from his lessons.
  2. Music Theory. I never liked the name, as I’m a science guy and was an idiot who was like “if there is evidence for it, then it’s a theory.” As it seemed like the name was used informally. Since the guitar is over a century old, it should be music pragmatism. However, some understanding would be helpful. It helps creativity and doesn’t dash it.
  3. Finding a way to make analogies to the notes on your fretboard. This is a must in the beginning!
  4. Knowing what notes make up a chord. It be simpler to make chords on the fly than rote remembering them all. Also Don’t get bogged down in BS like the caged system.
  5. Tabs suck! If they work for you, all the power to ya. Learning by ear has been so much more beneficial to me than tabs ever have been. I only feel like my ear has recently become well developed and needs to be more attenuated . I have started, recently, learning Hendrix by ear and have made real progress. Something I would not have dared do in the early days of guitar playing.

That’s a small but very important list.

So, here is my structure for learning guitar since 2008.

Kirk Hammett

David Gilmore

Slash

Jimi Hendrix

The idea was to start at Metallica and learn what we could from Kirk. In this case, light solos, a decent pace to strive for and really good for developing your ear. I learned more Metallica accidentally than I ever did intentionally.

David Gilmore is the next logical step. Very long solos, use of whammy, learning when to slow down and when to speed up.

Slash is up next, as he is undoubtedly the hardest to play on this list, before Jimi. Dexterity and speed are very important here.

Once you learn from them, we would approach Jimi Hendrix, the man himself and this would be close to a Ph.D in music in my mind, for those learning on the outside of a musical theory course.

The point isn’t to be able to play all their songs perfectly, but rather develop the muscle memory to be able to play better. You can replace any guitarist on the list with your personal preference for players.

I’ll leave it here for now. Good luck with your own musical progress. Rock on!

Why YouTube Psychologist Should be Disbarred from the APA

I know that’s a bold claim to make, but hear me out on this one. So, since I have very electric taste in what I follow for various reasons, sometimes a bunch of similar things will get caught in my feed at the same time and for different reasons. So a lot of “how to defeat a narcissist” clips have been showing up in my feed and they’re disingenuous for a lot of reasons. As someone who has tried a lot of these tactics with people that might have NPD, I have noticed they never work and also always exacerbate the problem. I’m not sure if it’s because the tactics are outdated or because these idiots are wising up the narc to go beyond we’re they used or, or what.

One case in point was when I was 22 ish and a woman who I bearly knew, was on the verge of a divorce, wanted to get to know me and none of these things seemed to get her away from me. She just kept at it. I knew back then it was an obvious red flag when she ask me to tell her I loved her when I had barely known her. I was also talking to another woman I was interested in at the time and wanted to see where that went, since she wanted to wait until the divorce was finalized before proceeding with fully putting out. She was open to light “cheating” though.

So naturally I looked some stuff up to see various ways I could broach the subject, since my gestures weren’t deterring her from badgering me.

Having tried all these things they put into the videos, I find they’re a boon. So my logic is, if you suck at your job that badly, should you really still get to have it? I mean these are people that are giving people sound advice, by their standards, claiming they’re degreed in this and if you had paid for the advice, you would have a malpractice suit against them. So what gives that these continue to go unchecked and the American Psychiatric Association hasn’t put them out to pasture yet? Cause if you have ever tried any of this, you know by now they’re making large sums of money off you continually losing to the potential NPDer. So where is the gain for anyone to actually win? Cause much like the narc, you have to go back to these people and they get their not toxic supply. It’s like the circle of violence for domestic abuse.

Maybe you have had a different experience here, but from my point of view, it seems like the real narcs are in these videos.

ONLYFANS: Model 001

So if you know anything about me, you know I don’t care for Onlyfans. I’m not the core audience for this site. It’s mostly for incels that are lonely and want the attention of desperate women that need to pay the rent cause they may not have much going for them. However, having paid attention to more than enough on my twitter for a plethora of reasons, I have come to admit that some of the OFs creators are more interesting than I initially gave them credit for.

So one random day I come across this. She got 80,000 fans and decided to sales pitch me personally. So naturally at that point I’m going to bite, just because this is the equivalent of Gordon Ramsay cooking your meal at his restaurant personally. There’s nothing really in it for the individual to condescend to the average twitter user especially over $4.00

So over the course of about 4 days we were talking. Damn, she really needs the money I figured, still not seeing the angle in which she was really benefiting from this exchange. I definitely did somethings that I normally don’t do, just to see if she would sour on me, but apparently I could do no wrong here. To her credit, she earned her $4.00 and she became the first time I ever paid for an OF subscription, since she so gifted at making the sale.

his will be the only time I do so though as I don’t want to get in the habit reviewing porn or modeling, as taste in that is very subjective. If I was going to do something I would probably start a new podcast just to converse with them, because I think I could bring the best out of them and let their personalities shine through.

So the pros of subscribing to her page are she is very lovely. Very intelligent! And quite the sales person. I think the average Joe that is into this type of stuff would benefit greatly. If however you’re like myself and not a lonely guy who needs even fake companionship to cope with the emotionally crippling state that you put yourself in on a daily basis, you’re not going to get anything out of this or any other OF model for that matter.

Cons of this are that I think her instagram pics are better and has more going for it.

So the review

LOOKS: 4 stars. She definitely exotic looking and stands out, but doesn’t suffer from not being the average style beauty queen.

CONTENT: 3 stars, needs a bit of improvement

PERSONALITY: 4 stars. Fantastic! Although to be fair I think most the Gen Zers have a lot going for them.

SALES PITCH: 5 stars. She really went beyond were she needed to get the job done.

Give her a follow if you feel inclined

The Rise and Fall of Vince McMahon, a review of Netflix’s Mr. McMahon.

INTRODUCTIONS: Let’s get two things out of the way before I begin this review. First, I had a micro investment in WWE in 2014, having bought stock. About 25 shares total. I sold those stocks in November the same year, due to ineptitude of the industry. Second, My entire family, going even back to my late grandfather, all loathe McMahon with a passion, so we’re highly biased. I have no doubt that all the allegations were true and hopefully him and everyone involved get what they deserve in court. That said, this documentary isn’t without flaws from the beginning.

WRITING: Fine

VISUALS: Fine. It’s a documentary, not much to deal with.

EDITING: Swamy and misleading.

CONTENT: Worthless. It’s billed as being about Vince, but is an an unstructured mess that deals more with wrestling in general than the subject matter.

CONCLUSION: This thing is plagued with Swamy Micheal Moore style editing from the beginning. This automatically brings into question its journalistic integrity. They quote-mine and edit things out of context to make certain people or peoples look worse than it is. Bill Simmons is no better than McMahon is with the way he edited this documentary to favor his anti McMahon bias. Which, while I share his bias, still think it’s a disingenuous thing to do. Mind you, this is the problems with this “series” from episode one and I’m only 20 mins in and it’s insufferable.

This doesn’t really know what it wants to be. It wants to be journalism, but fails. it wants to be about its subject matter, but fails. it wants to be about wrestling, but fails. It stacks the doc with ass kissing McMahon sell outs, whilst being a hit piece at the same time. Billy Simmons is proven incompetent as a director and we’re no better off for see this documentary. Maybe in the future, someone could do a legit piece and have it make sense. Perhaps Netflix would have been smarter to have sold this to McMahon and let him destroy it.

Ghostbusters 4 1/2: Frozen Empire movie review.

INTRODUCTION: So I waited a bit to see this movie until the BS died down, much like with the 2016 Ghostbusters. I think it’s helpful, especially when approaching a movie you loved for decades.

PLOT: The New Busters move back to NYC and fight a new big bad.

CHARACTERS :Very good and very well developed. Even the introduction of new characters is interesting. Pecks characters change is intriguing and interesting.

ACTING: excellent! Everyone brought their a game here.

DIALOGUE: Very well done.

STYLE: Excellent!

FX: Awesome. The mix of CGI and Practical work so well.

SUBTEXT: None. Regardless of what some people seem to say on the internet about an interpersonal relationship between one of the characters and a ghost be more than friendly ain’t there either.

CONCLUSION: Very slow burn of a movie that sets up a lot of interesting characters and equipment for a third installment. Gil Kenen did an amazing job with this movie and it made it Al the better. I very much look forward to a third installment.

4 out of 5 stars.

Football Season and the Bets

So Football is upon us! Rejoice for those of us into sports betting. So if you read my post Draft Kings: A Primer then you know I have tried my hand at sports gambling. I was always pretty good at picking winners with no investment on Twitter, but that doesn’t mean I could make money on it. Whilst I have not made a sizable amount yet, I still can wager that I know a thing or two. That said, like in the premier guide

Warning: There is no such thing as in “expert” in sports betting. I write these to relay my thoughts and experience on sports. I do not recommend ever taking advice on gambling from anyone, including myself. Should you risk any money, you do so at your own risk and assume all responsibility on the outcome. I, nor anyone else, bear any responsibility in your bad decisions.

With that out of the way, I also pointed out that The Cleveland Garudians are looking like they will at least make the World Cup Series in 2024 as I predicted. I first made this prediction back in June of 2013, kinda as a joke with my best friend. 10 years later I posted it online and well, slap my ass and call me Nostradamus. Still, we shall see! I also think Cleveland will win the series again in 2027.

I bring this up, because my next pick came to me before Superbowl 58, which is that I think 2024-2025 is going to be the Chargers year. So we shall see.

I’m also hoping The Orlando Magic Win in 2025. NHL is a bit too evenly matched to really call it, but I think the Kings might put on an amazing showing, maybe even getting the Stanley Cup.

EDIT: October 1 2024, I foresee a Columbus Blue Jackets as season winners.

I already won my first NFL bet of the season, kinda, by picking the bears to win the Hall of Fame game and thanks to inclement weather, well, they kinda won. so I’ll take it.

Still not a big fan of parley picks, but I’m kinda getting my bearings on them. I still favor money line bets as well.

So let’s look at the games and see what I think

Week One

Source: ESPN for the screenshot. Red marks my own.

I’ll be the first to admit in this roster, my Cleveland and Carolina Panthers picks are wishful thinking. Ohio has made me some decent money in recent memory, barring 11/24/23, a day that will live in infamy, when all but one Ohio team lost. I don’t know what games I am going to pick to bet on, but this is my starting list and like with pro wrestling my card is subject to change.

Week Two

I’m going to admit that my pick on Cin and Detroit seem weak and will probably be wrong. I can also admit that the Seahawks have a good chance in their game as well. Washington is also a weak choice, but not going to stop me from calling it how I see it.

Week Three

I think most of these will be strong choices in this week.

Week Four

So this we’ll be the last week I’ll be predicting, for now. By this time we should all have a good understanding of where the season is going and what to expect.

I’m fairly confident in most of these picks and think I’ll come out the other side on them, should I choose to bet any money. One thing is for sure, it seems this season will be interesting.
